Happy Crit-mas! A D&D Celebration of Critical Success

Building Anticipation & Managing Expectations in Roleplaying Games
The Great End-of-Year Cleanse for Aether Skies

Because nothing says holiday cheer like rolling a natural 20.

Every December, dice goblins across the realms gather around their tables, clutching shiny math rocks and whispering prayers to the Dice Gods. And in this most sacred season—Crit-maswe celebrate the greatest gift a player can receive:
The Natural 20.

A Nat 20 is a moment of triumph, chaos, and unforgettable storytelling. So let’s deck the halls with crits and glory with a full holiday post: player ideas, DM rewards, magic items, feats, and Crit-mas boons you can hand out like inspiration wrapped in tinsel.

🎁 Player Ideas: What to Do When You Roll That Nat 20

A critical success should feel epic. Here are fun ways for players to lean into the moment:

🎄 Add a Signature Critical Move

Create a personal “Crit-mas Miracle” that happens every time you crit—something descriptive and cool, not mechanical.

  • The rogue’s blade flickers with starlight.

  • The druid’s strike is accompanied by falling holly leaves.

  • The barbarian’s mighty swing creates a wintery shockwave of frost.

🎄 The Crit Carol

Whenever you crit, you must sing a one-line “Crit Carol.”
Examples:

  • “Joy to the roll, my blade takes flight!”

  • “Deck the halls with foes defeated!”

Silly? Absolutely. Memorable? Always.

🎄 ‘Gift of the Nat 20’ Roleplay Moment

If you crit on a social or exploration check, take a moment to describe how your exceptional success manifests.
For example:

  • On a Persuasion crit, the tavern crowd goes completely silent before erupting in applause.

  • On a Survival crit, your ranger finds a small evergreen tree growing in an impossible place—an omen of good luck.

🎄 The Holiday Hero Pose

Declare a signature stance you strike on every crit. bonus points for dramatic flair, fake snow, or jingling bells.

🎄 Magic Items of Crit-mas

Sprinkle some extra joy under your players’ metaphorical tree with these crit-boosting items:

🗡️ Santa’s Lucky Dice (Wondrous Item, Uncommon)

Once per long rest, you may roll an attack or skill check with advantage.
If either die is a natural 20, you gain temporary hit points equal to your level + proficiency bonus as festive energy surrounds you.

🎁 Wreathbreaker Blade (Weapon, Rare)

This weapon scores a critical hit on a 19 or 20.
On a critical hit, shimmering wreaths of radiant-green energy wrap around the target, dealing an additional 1d8 radiant damage and reducing its movement by 10 ft. until your next turn.

🔔 Bell of Befuddling Fortune (Wondrous Item, Rare)

Expend an action to ring the bell. The next d20 rolled by a creature of your choice within 60 feet gains a +d4 bonus; if it becomes a natural 20 (after modifiers or not), the bell magically jingles and grants them inspiration.

☃️ Snowglobe of Certain Success (Very Rare)

3 charges.
Spend 1 charge to turn any successful hit into a critical hit.
Spend 3 charges to declare a reroll of any d20 as a natural 20—but only once per long rest.
Recharge 1d3 charges each dawn via “holiday spirit.”

Feats for the Season of Critting

🎅 Spirit of Crit-mas

Prerequisite: Level 4+

  • Once per long rest, treat an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw as a natural 20.

  • Whenever you roll a natural 20, you gain 1 Crit-mas Spark.

  • Spend a Crit-mas Spark to add +1d6 radiant or cold damage to one attack or to give an ally advantage on their next roll.

🕯️ Holy Candle of Fateweaving

  • Once per short rest, you may “bank” a natural 20.

  • At any time before the next long rest, you may replace a roll you make with the banked 20.

  • If you end a long rest with an unspent crit, it flickers away as the Candle resets.

🎄 Deck the Halls… With Crits! (Melee-focused feat)

Your melee attacks are infused with festive brutality.

  • When you score a critical hit, you may push the target 10 feet or knock it prone.

  • Once per turn, when you hit a creature with melee weapon damage, you may deal an extra 1d4 damage if there is an ally within 5 ft. (Holiday teamwork!)

DM Tools: Crit-mas Boons

Sometimes a DM wants to give a little extra holiday cheer. Here are Crit-mas-themed boons you can hand out like magical stocking stuffers.

🎁 The Nat-20 Ornament

Give each player a magical ornament token at session start.
Once per session, they may shatter it (metaphorically or literally with a sound effect) to treat a roll as a natural 20.

🎁 The Snowy Inspiration Die

Like inspiration, but better:
When spent, the next attack roll OR skill check crits on a 19–20.

🎁 Holiday Fate Points

Whenever players do something particularly festive, wholesome, or fun—baking cookies with NPCs, rescuing a winter spirit, helping a town celebrate—give them a Fate Point.

Players may spend Fate Points to:

  • Reroll a d20.

  • Turn a hit into a crit.

  • Grant an ally advantage.

  • Turn a failed death save into a success (costs 2).

🎁 Jolly Interventions

Once per adventuring day, let “Holiday Magic” intervene:
Maybe a falling icicle knocks the enemy prone, or a friendly winter fox distracts an attacker.
Mechanically:
Once per day, the DM may grant a player an automatic critical hit on a roll of the player’s choice.

This should feel like a special, rare blessing—perfect for a finale moment.

🎄 Crit-mas Adventure Seeds

  • The Nativity of Nat 20s: An artifact that ensures perfect fate has gone missing. The party must recover it before the world’s luck spirals into chaos.

  • The Great Dice Goblin Heist: A hoarder goblin has stolen an entire village’s luck. Only heroic Crit-mas deeds can restore balance.

  • The Frostfather’s Blessing: A winter deity offers the party one critical success each—if they pass a series of whimsical trials.

🎉 May Your Holidays Be Merry and Your Crits Be Many

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Crit-mas, or simply the joy of rolling dice with friends, this season is all about fun, fellowship, and fantastic moments.
May your D20s be as shiny as ornaments, and your enemies as brittle as gingerbread.

Happy Crit-mas, and may all your rolls be natural 20s!
